Communications Major

The Communications major is permitted only for the Classes of 2019, 2018 and 2017.

To major in Communications (COMM), students must complete:

  • Two introductory courses: COMM 1000 - Fundamentals in Communication and Media Studies or COMM 1010 - Introduction to Communications and Media Studies (Fall 2016 and before); and COMC 2329/COMM 1011 - Media Industries
  • Two Media, Culture and Society courses: any course with a COMC designator fills this requirement (except COMC-2329)
  • One Ethics, Law, and Policy course
  • Three courses in ONE of the following concentrations: Film; Journalism; Media, Culture and Society; New Media/Participatory Media; TV/Radio
  • Three electives in any of the five concentrations listed above

Concentration in Film

*For Rose Hill and Lincoln Center Classes of 2019, 2018, and 2017 only, and the School of Professional and Continuing Studies.

Students with a concentration in Film must take:

  • FITV-1501/ COMM-2471: Understanding Film
  • Any two FITV courses 

Concentration in Journalism

*For Rose Hill and Lincoln Center Classes of 2019, 2018, and 2017 only, and the School of Professional and Continuing Studies.

Students with a concentration in Journalism must take:

  • JOUR-1701/ COMM-2083: Introduction to Multimedia Journalism
  • Any two JOUR courses 

Concentration in Media, Culture and Society

*For Rose Hill and Lincoln Center Classes of 2019, 2018, and 2017 only, and the School of Professional and Continuing Studies.

Students with a concentration in Media, Culture and Society must take:

  • COMC-1101/ COMM-2100: Communication and Culture: History, Theory and Methods
  • Any two COMC courses 

Concentration in New Media/ Participatory Media

*For Rose Hill and Lincoln Center Classes of 2019, 2018, and 2017 only, and the School of Professional and Continuing Studies.

Students with a concentration in New Media/ Participatory Media must take:

  • DTEM-1401/ COMM-2500: Introduction to Digital Technology and Emerging Media
  • Any two DTEM courses 

Concentration in TV/Radio

*For Rose Hill and Lincoln Center Classes of 2019, 2018, and 2017 only, and the School of Professional and Continuing Studies.

Students with a concentration in TV/Radio must take:

  • FITV-1601/ COMM-3332: Understanding Television or COMM-2330: Introduction to Electronic Media (discontinued)
  • Two of any FITV courses numbered x6xx or any JOUR courses with "Television" or Radio" in the course title

  • COMC-3370/ COMM-3476: Ethical Issues and the Media
  • COMC-3330/ COMM-3110: Peace, Justice and the Media

  • DTEM-4440: Privacy and Surveillance
  • DTEM: 4480/ COMM-4005: Digital Media and Public Responsibility
  • FITV-4570/ COMM-4001: Films of Moral Struggle

Minor Requirements

To minor in Communications (COMM), students must complete: 

  • One introductory course: COMM-1000: Fundamentals in Communication and Media Studies OR COMM-1010: Introduction to Communication and Media Studies (Fall 2016 and before) OR COMC-2339/COMM-1011: Media Industries
  • One Media, Culture and Society course: any course with a COMC designator fills this requirement except COMC-2329
  • One Ethics, Law, and Policy course
  • Three electives in any of the five concentrations listed below:

  1. Film
  2. Journalism
  3. Media, Culture and Society
  4. New Media/ Participatory Media
  5. TV/Radio
